New tablet friendly handwriting Chinese input, no Java required

May 14, 2015

The old Java handwriting Chinese input method has been replaced by a new HTML5 handwriting Chinese input method. It no longer requires you to install Oracle Java on your PC and it will also work on tablets.

To use the handwriting Chinese input method, click the brush icon next to a search input field. The handwriting Chinese input box will appear. You can draw the character on the left side. Matches will appear on the right side as you write. Click an entry from the right side to copy the character to the search input field. The middle bar contains buttons to switch between simplified and traditional Chinese, undo the last stroke, clear all, show / hide stroke numbers and page through the results.

Happy searching, happy learning! :-)

Please try pressing CTRL-F5 (or CMD-R on a Mac) to clear your broswer cache or try a different browser if the screen layout looks very odd.

Tip: Pinyin can be entered with or without tone numbers, e.g. 'nihao' or 'ni3hao3'.
